Transition to School
Children who are enrolled at Saint Kentigern for their Preschool education are encouraged to continue their education at the Girls’ School or the Boys’ School in the year they turn five. Children get priority to attend Saint Kentigern campus schools once they are enrolled and attending Preschool.
In order to help prepare our Preschool children for school, we have a special Extension Time for the 4 year old children. This occurs each day after lunch when the 3 year old children are sleeping or resting (12.30 – 2.00pm).
Children who continue on to the Saint Kentigern Schools will be fully involved in a comprehensive ‘Transition to School’ programme. This takes place the term before they are due to start school. Children involved in this programme will be taken for regular visits to either Saint Kentigern Girls’ or Boys’ School to spend time in the class they will be starting in. They will meet their own class teacher and the students who will be in their class when they start school. Participation in all areas of school life will be covered over the term including reading and writing programmes, maths, music, PE and sport lessons, Chapel service, assembly and specialist classes so that when they start school they will know what to expect.Activities include: phonics – letter sounds (using Casey caterpillar); advanced art activities; early literacy – recognition and recognition and formation of numbers; co-formation of letters; early numeracy - operative group games; science experiments; cooking; maths and language games and other varying activities each day. Concentration and remaining focussed on a task with independent work is encouraged.
