Our well-established Music programme is diverse and exciting and we encourage our boys to develop skills and talent in musical performance.

Our purpose-built, specialist Music School comprises a large multi-functional teaching room, a band room and three smaller practice studios where itinerant music lessons are held.

Instrumental Music Programme

The itinerant music programme enables boys to become actively involved in learning an instrument with specialist music teachers. The annual calendar is full of musical events for our young musicians to showcase talent and build confidence.

There are many opportunities for students to perform both individually or in a group at either small evening gatherings, to encourage confidence in our learners, or in significant concerts for large audiences.

We have a major Music Evening in the first half of the year which features all major music groups as well as a large number of soloists. Our end of year Showcase assembly highlights our top groups and top soloists.

Each year we enter both soloists and groups in the Lewis Eady Music Competition and win significant recognition. Many of the boys also attend the APPA (Auckland Primary Principals' Association) courses and play in the APPA bands and orchestras.

Our Bands

Jazz Band

Boys are invited to audition annually for the Jazz Band. Musicianship and sight reading are expected to be good and there is the opportunity to develop improvisatory skills.

Our Jazz Band has many opportunities to perform both in school and in the community during the year.

A Jazz Quartet caters for our more advanced players.

Choral Music Programme

There are two major choral groups, the auditioned Performers' Choir and the All Comers' Choir for our younger students who simply love to sing! Boys in Years 6, 7 and 8 can audition to be a member of the Performers' Choir. The choir practises two mornings each week before school. The choir is important and prestigious for its members; they sing at our Family Services, School Concerts, the Christmas Cathedral Service and numerous concerts and community events throughout the year.

The All Comers' Choir is a group of Year 4, 5 and 6 boys who sing a simpler repertoire.  They also have the opportunity to perform in our Chapel services and a variety of both school and community functions.
